URBAN DESIGN & MOBILITY FORUM

Sparking the Cross-Pollination of Ideas and Breaking Down Silos

Cape Town, South Africa

Quarterly event in Cape Town

The Urban Design and Mobility Forum is a quarterly platform co-hosted by Young Urbanists, the Office of the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, and directorates such as Urban Mobility and Spatial Planning & Environment. Designed to foster cross-sector dialogue, the forum brings together city officials, professionals, and civil society to tackle complex urban challenges through focused, sometimes difficult conversations.

Held every three months, each session explores a central theme—ranging from safer street design and densification to the future of MyCiTi Phase 2A. The aim is to surface new thinking while creating space for critical reflection and collaboration that prioritises people over cars.

The most recent edition took place at Iyatsiba Lab in Woodstock and created space to step back from day-to-day delivery pressures and reflect on broader questions around transport justice and urban humanity. Previous forums have explored themes such as street experiments—leading to changes that will be announced soon—urban waterways, and key upcoming reforms to the MyCiTi network.

A quarterly forum co-hosted by Young Urbanists, the Mayor’s Office, and City directorates. It’s a space for cross-pollination of ideas, challenging entrenched views, and supporting passionate young staff, planners, and changemakers from across sectors. The forum creates room for honest dialogue, fresh thinking, and collaborative problem-solving across mobility, design, and public space.
